World-Class Interaction Design Institute partners with Kerala Startup Mission for Summer School Programme
Series of curated workshops on digital technologies planned in Kochi
from Dec 3 to 21, 2018
Innovation through design, engaging with world-class experts
With the aim of encouraging innovation training at the intersection of design thinking and digital technologies, the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) is conducting its first-ever Summer School programme in India in association with the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) in Kochi from December 3 to 21.
Founded in 2008, the CIID is one of the top global design schools. It focuses solely on interaction design, which combines traditional design with socio-technological trends. It is also one of the few places where technology is used as a tool inside art, psychology, music etc.
The CIID Summer School programme will consist of a series of 12 workshops, covering a range of subjects from Interaction Design and Service Design to designing with Blockchain, Machine Learning, and Designing Connected Products.
The workshops are designed to unlock the creative potential of students and professionals working in government, companies, organizations, and startups. The participants will learn how to practice life-centred design, embrace new technologies, and accelerate the pace of innovation in their work and daily lives.
Led by experts from all over the world, the CIID Summer School uses the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a context of learning, innovating and deploying. Most workshops have a topic, a challenge or an opportunity, and even though the workshops run around design briefs they are not created to draft solutions for a particular problem or opportunity, but to acquire new approaches and competencies to embrace future challenges differently.
The programme offers 50% super early-bird seat until September 15th with a fee of $650 per five-day workshop. For every week there will be three to four different types of workshops for the participants to choose from.
Participants can join for a single week or choose two to three consecutive workshops to create their own curriculum. The one-week-long workshops have been designed to be stand-alone and run from Monday to Friday, from 9am till 5pm.
“The unique feature of the programme is that the participants with any background or expertise, can attend it and understand how to incorporate design principles in their day to day work”, said Dr. Saji Gopinath, CEO, KSUM. For making the most out of the program the participants should have an appetite for learning and willingness to cooperate in a team, he added.
These workshops will encourage participants to work intensely in a short period of time, going through a series of engaging learning and sharing sessions to understand the design processes and the use of new technologies.
“Design is the missing layer in our technological ecosystem and CIID is one of world’s best design institutes which can help us build that layer and inspire us to create technologies that are focused on people and life,” said Arvind Sanjeev, former fellow, KSUM and alumnus of CIID.
The unique feature of the programme is that the participants can be from different countries , with range in age, seniority, and expertise, but with a shared a passion for applying newly acquired skills and tools in their work and lives. They should have an appetite for learning and willingness to cooperate in teams.

Additional activities -open to the public- will also be happening around the CIID Kochi Summer School, such as Tuesday’s Lightning Talks where all faculty members of the Summer School do 7 minute-long Pecha Kucha-style talks. They share a demo, opinion piece, or projects that inspire their work. These talks are a great boost of inspiration and they are open to the public. The Lightning Talks will happen on Tuesday 4th, Tuesday 11th, and Tuesday 18th of December.
Friday “Share Your Work” is another programme where all participants of the Summer School share their outcomes from the week: pictures, graphics, prototypes, learnings, insights, etc. This mini-exhibition is free and open to the public. They will occur on Friday 07th, Friday 14th and Friday 21st December.
CIID is an international hub of creative minds, and its mission is to develop and empower networks of individuals to make a positive impact through the design of innovative products, services, and environments for a better future.

Online registration of drones must from Dec. 1
Drones, their operators and pilots will have to be mandatorily registered on aviation regulator DGCA’s online portal, effective December 1.
The use of remotely piloted aircraft, a kind of drone, is allowed for taking photographs, conducting surveys such as for laying of pipelines and agricultural purposes and surveillance, as per the regulations on remotely piloted aircraft system unveiled by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Monday.
The rules bar use of drones for delivery of items. They can be deployed for spraying of pesticides and delivery of relief material during a natural disaster only on a case-by-case basis.
Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) have been divided into five categories – nano (less than 250gm), micro (between 250 gm and 2kg), small (between 2 and 25 kg) and large (more than 150 kg).
Users will have to go online to seek a unique identification number for each drone as well as an operator’s permit licence.
They will have to provide details of flight path to be undertaken for every flight. However, nano drones are exempt from all these pre-requisites.
Wedding photographers
Operations are allowed in daylight and within the visual range or a range of 450 m. Wedding photographers are allowed to use micro drones during night, if they are taking pictures in an enclosed premises which is also well-lit.
Drones are barred from being flown near airports, international border, coastline, Parliament, Secretariat complex in State capitals, military installations and eco sensitive zones.
Small and large drones can fly up to a maximum height of 400 feet. Nano drones must not fly beyond 50 feet and micro drones must be within 200 feet from ground level.
“The DGCA will also be connected to district police officers and will inform them about drone flights cleared by it,” Secretary, Civil Aviation Ministry, R.N. Choubey told a press conference. Drone users are also advised to keep the local police informed of flights planned by them.

Kerala start-up provides vital help to rescue ops in flood-hit areas
A Geo Spatial Technology Solution with built-in drone mapping and location intelligence, developed by Kerala-based start-up Strava Technologies, has helped save many lives during the devastating floods in Kerala by providing critical support to the massive real time rescue operations undertaken by the Defence teams and state agencies.
Mentored by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), the solution developed by Strava Technologies provided vital intelligence to the Army, Navy, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force and Coast Guard in carrying out the rescue operations in areas ravaged by the worst-ever floods in the state.
According to officials at the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the Geo Spatial Division of the startup offered immense help in the functioning of the Emergency Control Centre by consolidating distress calls, social media and WhatsApp SoS and other inputs from all parts of the state, thereby providing the final intelligence data to the forces.
"We added our Spatial Big Data Analytic platform "CyberMonkey™” - a Geospatial Intelligence System-- to compile all the location data. This solution provided error and duplication free location data of people, who need emergency assistance. The real time Geo Visualization feature of the platform supported the entire team to visually analyze and to plan the rescue mission from the State Emergency Operation Control (SEOC) room,” said an official of the startup.
Officials of the State IT Mission, KSDMA, SEOC and the Secretariat IT Cell had worked along with the teams of Defence and Strava Technologies to sort out all data from social media, e-mails and WhatsApp groups of officials including District Collectors, Deputy Collectors and personnel of other departments.
"Location is very crucial in the rescue operation as each life is precious for us. We really appreciate the work done by Strava Technologies in the rescue operation. Cyber Monkey™ helped us achieve our goal on time, and thus saved many lives," said Mr. Sanooj, Commander, Indian Navy. Mr. Vairav, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF); and Ms. Kavitha, Major, Indian Army also lauded the services of the startup.
Commenting on their contribution, Ms. Jancy Jose, Managing Director, Strava Technologies, said “Most of my team members had worked tirelessly, at least 18 hours daily, under higher officers, who are handling the disaster from the State Control Centre.”
“As an entrepreneur from Kerala, this is a proud moment for me and my team. Now we are working in supporting our state in the third phase of rehabilitation by providing our drone-based solutions to analyse the intensity of flood affected areas in various parts of Kerala,” she added.
KSUM is the nodal agency of Government of Kerala for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
